How to tell if you have a sexual addiction

How can you tell if your
sexual behaviour is addictive? Below are a list of questions which can help you decide if you're
sexual behaviour is showing a tendency towards addiction. Answer the questions as honestly as you
can – this is an opportunity to take an honest look at your sexual behaviour and a chance to be
clear whether or not you have a sexual addiction problem.

- Do you feel that you have lost control
or choice over your sexual behaviour; that would include frequency and types of
behaviour?
- Are you experiencing serious
consequences in one or more of the major areas of your life due to your sexual behaviour:
physical, emotional, legal, financial, work, relationships, social, spiritual?
- Do you find it difficult to stop or
control even despite these adverse effects?
- Is your sexual behaviour self harming in
nature or dangerous in any way?
- Have you tried and subsequently failed
to control your sexual behaviour?
- Has your sexual obsession become central
to your life – has it become the priority?
- Has sex become an essential coping
mechanism in your life?
- Has your sexual behaviour increased or
the risk factor increased or has your behaviour worsened in some other way?
- Do you spend inordinate amounts of time
pursuing sexual encounter situation and/or lengthy periods getting over the behaviour
episodes?
- Do you neglect other essential or
important areas of your life in favour of sex.
- When you feel guilty and ashamed about
your sexual behaviour do you feel driven to have more sex to try to feel better?
- Are other people concerned about your
behaviour?
- Do you have an ambivalent relationship
with sex; do you hate it and yet desire it in almost equal measure?
- Does a voice inside say quit and yet
another voice says keep going?

All addictions can seem
baffling and powerful, and sexual addiction, whilst to some, may seem humorous and a bit of a
laugh, to the sufferer is no fun. A person who struggles with sex addiction is in pain and needs
help. There is specialist help available from those of us who have specialised in this area. Ask
for help; this is a solvable problem – believe me.
